S.E. Shires · Q Series (Eastman)

S.E. Shires Q40S

The warmer, broader of Shires' two Q Series euphoniums, pairing a 12-inch medium-weight bell with a brass leadpipe and a full compensating system.

Provenance under review. Reported as China, but the country of manufacture is not yet independently cited — the maker's page does not state one.

Build: contract — S.E. Shires’s own design, built by Eastman.

Shires-branded, Eastman-manufactured. Shires' euphonium line is ENTIRELY the Q Series; its Holliston, MA shop builds trumpets/trombones/horns, not these — so a Shires euphonium is not a US-made Shires instrument.

The verdict

The Q40S is the broad-voiced member of Shires’ two-model euphonium pair. Its larger, medium-weight bell, soldered bead, and brass leadpipe point in the same direction: warmth, openness, and a little more spread around the sound. Shires itself describes the model as open and free blowing, with a broad, warm timbre suitable for ensemble or solo playing.

I place it in the advanced tier. It has the full compensating mechanism and large-bore specification a serious player expects, but its real value is not a checklist—it is the choice it creates beside the Q41S. Pick the Q40S when you want breadth and warmth; pick the Q41S when clarity and projection matter more. The unresolved manufacturing provenance is worth knowing, but it does not change that musical distinction.

Who it's for
Advancing and serious players who want a warm, open compensating euphonium for ensemble and solo work without moving into a flagship custom-price tier.
Known for
An open, free-blowing feel and broad, warm timbre from its 12-inch hand-hammered medium-weight bell, soldered bead, and brass leadpipe.
Watch out
Compare it directly with the Q41S: the Q40S favors breadth and warmth, while the smaller-bell Q41S is the clearer, more projecting choice. Country of manufacture remains under review.
