The verdict
The 2727TA is the useful exception that proves two ideas are often confused: compensating does not necessarily mean four valves. Willson calls this model the predecessor of its fully compensating four-valve TA instruments. Its three valves automatically bring compensating tubing into play, retaining familiar three-valve fingerings in a comparatively light 3.9 kg instrument.
I place it in the advanced tier rather than the professional tier used for modern 3+1 flagships. The mechanism is sophisticated and the instrument is not a student horn, but three valves still cannot supply the extended chromatic low register or the alternate-fingering options of a fourth valve. That makes the 2727TA a deliberate traditional choice—not a cheaper substitute for a contemporary four-valve euphonium.
