The verdict
The 842 Custom refines Yamaha’s professional architecture instead of enlarging it. The 300 mm bell, 15.0-to-16.8 mm bore progression, 664 mm height, and 3+1 compensation closely mirror the 642 Neo. The distinction lies in the Custom execution, gold-plated trim, EP-53DL mouthpiece, and the 842TS trigger system.
Yamaha says the trigger’s added mass contributes depth of tone and clearer articulation as well as pitch control. Those are meaningful differences only if the player experiences them. Compare the 642 Neo on equal terms; choose the 842 because its response and fittings are better for the player, not because the model number is higher.
