Dr. Joel Pugh is the professor of low brass at the University of North Dakota, where he teaches trombone, euphonium, and tuba and founded and directs the North Dakota Trombone Choir and the North Dakota Tuba Quartet. A genuine doubler, he performs at a high level on both trombone — as principal trombone of the Grand Forks Symphony and a member of the Dakota Brass, International Brass Quintet, and Prairie Trombone Quartet — and euphonium, having served as principal euphonium in the Brass Band of Columbus and the Cuyahoga Valley Brass Band, with recorded concerto solos on releases by both ensembles.
He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in euphonium performance from Michigan State University, a Master of Music in trombone performance from Bowling Green State University, and a degree from Ithaca College. As a soloist and clinician he has appeared at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Great American Brass Band Festival, the North American Brass Band Association gala, Tubonium, and numerous state music-education conventions, and has given recitals at universities including Ohio State, LSU, and the University of Minnesota. His work has appeared in the ITEA Journal and the Brass Band Bridge, and he has contributed to the ITEA Solo Literature Project.
Pugh is a Besson performing artist on euphonium (and a Courtois artist on trombone — both Buffet Crampon Group brands), and each summer he teaches at the International Music Camp on the North Dakota/Manitoba border.
