Bellstedt built Napoli on Luigi Denza’s Funiculì, Funiculà as a vehicle for his own cornet virtuosity. Euphonium arrangements preserve the Golden Age formula: a tune the audience recognizes immediately, followed by variations that remove every comfort from the soloist.
Multiple tonguing, speed, flexibility, and stamina all matter, but the performance still needs charm. If the tune stops dancing, the piece becomes an athletic drill; if the player chases character without precision, the variations unravel.
