Vintage is built around the contrast between the euphonium’s long singing line and music with a lighter, more irregular rhythmic gait. That contrast has to feel like a single personality rather than two unrelated pieces stitched together.

The exposed upper register attracts attention, but the harder work is controlling tempo and phrase across the changes of character. With band it projects as a compact concerto; with piano it is a substantial recital test for both musicians.
