Graham treats the soloist as a sequence of sharply drawn characters. The music needs clarity of narrative: athletic writing, broad melodic episodes, and theatrical gestures should feel like parts of one fast-moving story.

Its difficulty is not only high notes and velocity. The player has to preserve style through fatigue and make every return of bravura material sound newly energized.
