These pieces require five distinct characters while preserving Schumann’s intimate chamber scale. The piano is an equal voice, often responsible for the agitation or calm against which the euphonium line is heard.
The cycle is excellent training in Romantic timing. Portamento, rubato, and vibrato can all be useful, but only when coordinated with harmony and with the pianist’s motion.
