Vaughan Williams gives the band a muscular contrapuntal toccata rather than a comfortable march. The euphonium part must project its rhythmic identity through a dense texture while remaining part of the mechanism, not sitting on top of it.

Clean articulation begins with subdivision. Notes that are technically correct but placed by feel will not lock with the surrounding lines, and excessive weight turns the figure sluggish. Practise the rhythm without the instrument, then with a light sound, before adding the full martial character.
